MMA For Self Defense

When it comes to Self Defense, is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) the key? Are Ultimate Fighting Champions the Ultimate Street Fighters? As an unanswered question in the martial arts world, we must take a look at what MMA is and what it isn’t. The UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship claims MMA is “As Real as IT Gets”. What is the it?
It is a Fight. Fighting and Self Defense are two distinct matters that mesh more often than not. In the court of law, lawyers often try to prove self defense for a client in an all out brawl. What’s the difference? In rudimentary terms, a fight is prescheduled; a self defense situation is not. There doesn’t have to be an official fight card, but both the fighters know they are participating.
Go ahead and imagine your classic guy fights over girl situation. Both of the guys most likely exchange very explosive language as they size each other up. They might get in each others face while exchanging these words and begin to shove and push each other. One throws a right hook and the battle begins. As these two are shoving back and forth, they already made up their minds to fight. If they didn’t want to participate in the nonsense scuffle they would have made their exit 17 curse words ago.
On the other hand, you have a situation where the fight isn’t scheduled. This fight for survival is self defense. The aggressor will abruptly surface with brutal threats or acts of violence. You understand the the burglar who jumps through the window wielding a knife, the robber who holds you hostage, and the rapist as he attacks the girl. These are all sudden, paralyzing attacks where only self defense skills will aid you.
In comparison, a fight with someone in your weight class you have been readying yourselffor over months is completely different than a gigantic armed attacker spontaneously popping up in your daily routine. These are two different environments where success in one does not necessarily dictate success in the other. After all, Mixed Martial Arts is a Sport aimed to be “As Real as IT Gets” as long as it is As Safe As it Gets. In the real world, there are literally no rules; guns, knifes, and bats are present. There are also multiple attackers which render ground fighting as useful to one as a steak to a vegetarian. There is no cutman to keep the blood out of your eyes. Luckily for women, there is no referee to punish for devastating groin strikes.
In the end, remember MMA is a sport. The fights are scheduled so the fighters can prepare. Their opponents don’t arbitrarily ambush them as they bring their groceries in the house. Only that happens in self defense instances where shock and fear arise as quickly as the attacker. When considering MMA or Mixed Martial Arts as a Self Defense solution call to mind the ultimate end in both. If you’re fighting for glory, go with the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. If you want to know how to successfully fight for your life, side with [online self defense].
